WHY JESUS CAME After hanging on the cross for about 6 hours, Jesus said something in a loud voice that sounded like "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" [Mt 27:46], which is the Hebrew words for the beginning of Psalm 22:1, " My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"  If it was Psalm 22 of David that Jesus was quoting, then it continues with praising God in most of the Psalm. We say 'sounded like' because from the oral tradition the gospel of Mark was based on, they thought they heard the Aramaic word "ELOI" [Mk 15:34] instead of "ELI" and both Matthew and Mark tell that some of the people believed they heard Jesus "calling for Elijah" [Mt 27:47]. No one really knows, if at the end of His physical life Jesus felt God had forsaken Him or if He was starting to quote Psalm 22 as an expression of praise and prophecy fulfilled. Apparently the author of Hebrews thought Jesus was quoting Psalm 22, as he attributed a quote from Psalm 22:22 [Heb 2:12] to Jesus. At times, it is valid to say no one knows for sure, although people still like to speculate. We know that previously, when considering the unpleasant events at the end of His early life, Jesus stated “SHALL I PRAY, `FATHER, SAVE ME FROM WHAT LIES  AHEAD'? BUT THAT IS THE VERY REASON WHY I  CAME!” [Jn 12:27 TL]. Are you glad Jesus came?                  Home, BasicSubjects, Scriptures
